The probability of strong solar flares will remain in the near future, stated Sergey Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory.
According to the scientist, record solar flares are possible in 2026. Bogachev added that the current solar cycle demonstrates a very high amplitude (1.5 times higher than the previous one), but no flares of X10 level or higher have been recorded on the star so far. The strongest flare to date is the X9 flare that occurred on October 3, 2024.
He reminded about the peculiarity of the two previous cycles of the 21st century (cycle 23 and cycle 24). "The strongest flares in them occurred two to three years after the cycle's maximum," he predicted.
On December 27, a strong flare was recorded on the Sun.
