AI and Cybersecurity: Forecast for Latvia in 2026

Next year, significant changes in the dynamics of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry are unlikely to be anticipated, said Signe Balinya, president of the Latvian Association of Information and Communication Technologies (LIKTA), to the LETA agency.

According to her, in 2026, further development of artificial intelligence and related infrastructure is expected in the ICT sector, as well as an expansion of practical applications, for example, through simpler automation tools.

However, significant turning points in the overall dynamics of the industry are unlikely to occur. Stagnation and uncertainty, according to Balinya, may continue to be supported by the geopolitical situation, trust risks in the region, and growing demands in the field of cybersecurity.

At the same time, she noted that several projects from previous years could be completed in Latvia next year, including the full operation of the AVIS system, which will allow residents to automatically receive their entitled benefits, as well as progress towards the implementation of the EU digital identity wallet by the end of 2026, which will ensure the use of digital documents and serve as an impetus for a new wave of digitalization.

Balinya mentioned that one of the main tasks for 2026 will undoubtedly be cybersecurity — in the context of increasing attacks and global fraud risks, both companies and their clients will need to strengthen protection and work with users, as most incidents still occur due to the human factor.

LIKTA is a professional non-governmental organization founded in 1998, encompassing the entire ICT sector of Latvia — the field of information technology and software, telecommunications, and the service sector. The goal of LIKTA is to promote the development of the information society, improve ICT education, and grow the industry in Latvia. LIKTA unites industry organizations and companies, as well as individual members and other associations.
