The low-orbit satellite constellation "Dawn" will be a sovereign response to the American Starlink system. This was stated by the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The development is being handled by "Bureau 1440."
Starlink is a global high-speed satellite internet system created by the American company SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk.
Its key difference from traditional satellite providers is the use of not single devices in high orbit, but a massive constellation of thousands of small satellites placed in low Earth orbit. This allows for broadband internet access with low signal latency in the most remote and hard-to-reach regions of the world, where terrestrial infrastructure is lacking.
In Russia, it was stated that the top priority is to ensure the availability of the technology for Russian consumers not only in terms of coverage but also cost. Officials in Moscow claim that the system will enable a "qualitative leap" in providing communication to remote regions of the country, where traditional methods of signal delivery require high costs.
The satellites of the "Dawn" constellation will be able to provide broadband internet anywhere on Earth, including connections on board airplanes and trains. According to plans, the commercial launch of the service is scheduled for 2027, when more than 250 devices will be operational in orbit. By 2035, the constellation could grow to 900 satellites, allowing for global coverage.
