A giant prominence has formed on the Sun and has broken off from it. This is stated in a report from the space research laboratory.
A prominence is a giant fountain of hot gas that rises and is held above the surface of the Sun by magnetic fields. The formation and ejection of the prominence were recorded by scientists on the night of November 20. Specialists noted that the "king prominence" is about one million kilometers in size, which is 80 times larger than Earth.
Scientists could not definitively name the reason why a giant plasma formation broke off from the Sun. However, specialists from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that the source of the phenomenon is located on the far side of the Sun and is hidden from view.
They also noted that a large cloud of plasma was ejected from roughly the same area of the Sun where the right "leg" of the prominence was anchored a few days ago. "It is possible that both events (the earlier ejection and today's detachment of the giant prominence) have a common source on the Sun," the scientists concluded.
