The International Chess Federation temporarily suspended the membership of the Russian Chess Federation after the Russian side failed to meet the requirements of the Court of Arbitration for Sport related to activities in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced the temporary suspension of the membership of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF). The decision was made after reviewing the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which previously mandated the Russian side to cease activities in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
FIDE stated that the deadline set by the court for fulfilling these requirements has expired, but the necessary measures have not been taken.
The history of the conflict began back in 2024 when, at the initiative of the Ukrainian Chess Federation, FIDE imposed sanctions against the Russian federation. The reason was the RCF's activities in territories of Ukraine under Russian control.
Later, the disciplinary measures were softened: instead of a partial disqualification, the federation received a fine of 45,000 euros. However, the Ukrainian side disagreed with this decision and appealed to the CAS.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport concluded that the actions of the RCF affect the issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity and mandated the Russian federation to cease the relevant activities within 90 days.
What is important to know: the sanctions specifically concern the Russian Chess Federation as an organization. Russian chess players retain the right to participate in international tournaments under the auspices of FIDE in accordance with the federation's current rules.
Thus, this does not involve the disqualification of individual athletes from competitions.
FIDE emphasized that the restrictive measures apply exclusively to the membership of the national federation in the international organization.
The situation regarding the status of the Russian federation has become one of the most notable international disputes in the chess world in recent years. It reflects a broader process of reassessing the relationships of international sports organizations with Russian entities following the onset of the war in Ukraine.
It is not yet reported how long the membership suspension will last and what steps the Russian side must take to restore its rights within the organization.
