The Latvian national ice hockey team will play against Norway in the quarterfinals of the World Championship on Thursday evening. A victory will allow the Latvians to reach the semifinals of the tournament for the second time in history.

The Latvian national ice hockey team is approaching the most important match of the World Championship. On Thursday evening, the Latvian team will face Norway in the quarterfinals of the tournament taking place in Switzerland.

The match will start at 21:20 Latvian time in Fribourg at the BCF arena.

If Latvia wins, it will reach the semifinals of the World Championship for only the second time in history. The first such success was achieved in 2023 when the team sensationally won the bronze medals and sparked a real hockey boom in the country. Now the team has a chance to repeat that historic journey.

In the group stage, Latvia finished third in Group A. The team defeated Germany, the USA, Great Britain, and Hungary, but lost to Switzerland, Austria, and Finland. The victories over the USA and the crushing defeat of Hungary with a score of 8:1 in the last group match were particularly bright for the Latvians.

Norway, which finished second in Group B, is also having a strong tournament. The Norwegians managed to beat Sweden and the Czech Republic, and lost to Canada only in overtime.

This makes the upcoming quarterfinal much less predictable than it may seem based on the teams' names.

In this championship, Latvia is particularly surprising with the depth of its roster. Despite the absence of several NHL players and a few injured leaders, the team is showing one of the most productive tournaments in recent years. After the group stage, three Latvian hockey players entered the top ten scorers of the World Championship. Additionally, captain Rudolf Balcers became the top scorer of the group stage.

One of the revelations of the tournament is 17-year-old Oliver Murnieks — the youngest player in the history of the Latvian national team at World Championships. Moreover, there are seven debutants in the team.

For Latvian hockey, this tournament is also important because expectations from fans have sharply increased after the bronze in 2023. The last World Championship was unsuccessful for the team — they did not advance from the group and finished only in tenth place. Now Latvia has a chance to return to being one of the main sensations of the tournament.

In other quarterfinals, Finland will play against the Czech Republic, the USA will meet Canada, and Switzerland will face Sweden.

The semifinal pairs will be determined after all matches are completed based on the results of the group stage.

The World Championship will conclude on May 31.
