The Latvian hockey team considers the match against the USA to be key in the current World Championship. Players acknowledge that this game could significantly impact the team's chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
Latvian national team forward Philipp Buncis stated before the World Championship match against the USA that the team understands the significance of the upcoming game and is preparing for one of the toughest challenges of the tournament.
The match will take place on Saturday in Zurich at the Swiss Life Arena. The game is set to start at 13:20 Latvian time.
“We fully understand what’s at stake,” Buncis said in a conversation with LETA. According to him, almost the entire USA roster consists of NHL players, so the Latvian team is expecting very fast and technical hockey.
At the same time, the forward noted that the Americans also started the tournament with some problems. The USA team has already lost to Switzerland and Finland, and managed to defeat Germany only in a shootout.
In Buncis's opinion, Latvia played its best matches in this championship against Switzerland and Germany.
“We know what we can do if we stick to our plan, play as a team, show commitment, fighting spirit, and character,” the forward emphasized.
After a crushing defeat to Finland with a score of 1:7, the upcoming match takes on special significance for Latvia. The team remains in the fight for a place in the quarterfinals, but the time for mistakes is running out.
For the fans, this is essentially one of the first playoff matches in terms of tension. The outcome of the game could seriously change Latvia's position in the group.
Buncis also acknowledged that the team does not expect an easy game. “All the guys are determined to do everything possible,” the hockey player said, adding that the team will have to show its best hockey to have a chance at victory.
Currently, Latvia has one victory in regulation time in the tournament — against Germany. The team has also lost to Switzerland, Austria, and Finland. The USA, on the other hand, has defeated Great Britain and Germany but lost to Switzerland and Finland.
After the match against the Americans, the Latvian team will continue the tournament with games against Great Britain and Hungary.
The 89th Ice Hockey World Championship is taking place in Switzerland and will conclude on May 31.
