The Latvian ice hockey team will meet one of the most confident teams in the World Championship today — Finland. After the loss to Austria, it is especially important for the Latvians to earn points in the fight for the quarter-finals.

The Latvian men's ice hockey team will play its fourth match of the World Championship today in Zurich, facing the currently undefeated Finland.

The Group A game will take place at the Swiss Life Arena and will start at 17:20 Latvian time.

This match is particularly important for the Latvian team after an unexpected defeat to Austria, complicating their fight for a place in the quarter-finals.

The tournament has been uneven for the Latvian team so far. They lost to Switzerland 2:4, then defeated Germany 2:0, but on Tuesday they lost to Austria 1:3.

Finland, on the other hand, started very confidently. The Finns have already defeated Germany, Hungary, and the USA, with a significant victory over the Americans, winning 6:2.

After the first matches in Group A, Switzerland leads with 12 points. Finland and Austria each have nine points, while Latvia currently has only three points after three games.

Importantly, after the loss to Austria, it has become significantly more difficult for the Latvian team to compete for a place in the quarter-finals. Now points against favorites hold particular value.

Additional challenges are also related to the roster situation. The Latvian team arrived at the championship without several key players.

Due to injuries, NHL Philadelphia Flyers forward Rodrigo Abols and Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Arturs Shilovs are missing the tournament. Several AHL players and other important members of the team are also not playing.

Moreover, a number of Latvian NHL players, including Zemgus Girgensons, Teodors Blugers, Elvis Merzlikins, and Uvis Balinskis, have declined to participate in the championship.

Against this backdrop, special attention is drawn to young players. Seven hockey players are making their debut for Latvia, including 17-year-old forward Olivers Murnieks, who has become the youngest player in Latvian history at the World Championships.

The Finnish team, in turn, has brought a very strong roster. Head coach Antti Pennanen has included 12 NHL players in the lineup.

In fact, Latvia is facing one of the toughest matches of the group stage — against a team that has already shown it can dominate even against the USA.

After the game with Finland, the Latvian team will face the USA, Great Britain, and Hungary. These last matches could be decisive in the fight for the playoffs.
