The Americans were considered the clear favorites of the match, but the British team held their defense for a long time and made their opponents nervous. The first period ended with a minimal advantage for the USA - the puck was scored by Paul Cotter in the 14th minute.
In the second period, the British unexpectedly returned to the game. Taking advantage of a power play, Nathaniel Halbert equalized the score and added intrigue to the match. However, Great Britain could not hold the tie until the break: three minutes before the end of the period, Isaac Howard put the Americans back in the lead. In the 43rd minute, forward Matthew Olivier scored the USA's third goal. In the 44th minute, defenseman Declan Carlisle strengthened the American team's advantage. In the 57th minute, forward Isaac Howard scored the USA's fifth goal, setting the final score at 5:1.
As a result, the USA team achieved their first victory in the tournament after an opening loss to Switzerland (1:3). For the British, this is already their second consecutive defeat - earlier the team lost to Austria with a score of 2:5.
Meanwhile, in Group B, the Slovakia team confidently defeated Italy. The Slovaks gradually increased the pressure and confirmed their status as favorites of the match with a score of 4:1, gaining important points in the fight for a playoff spot.
In the evening, Latvian fans will focus on the match between the Latvia team and Germany. After losing to Switzerland with a score of 2:4, Harijs Vitolins' team needs to earn their first points in the tournament very badly.
It is worth noting that at the World Championship, 16 teams are divided into two groups. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The tournament will conclude on May 31.
