On Sunday, March 8, the Iranian team lost to the Philippines (0:2) in the final match of the group stage of the Asian Cup and was eliminated from the tournament, finishing last in Group A.
Previously, the players faced criticism for not singing the national anthem at one of the matches. It was reported that five Iranian footballers escaped from the team's location with the help of Australian police. Later, Australia's Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke confirmed that these athletes were granted temporary humanitarian visas.
"They can stay in Australia. They are safe here and should feel at home. I am telling the other team members that they have the same opportunity. Australia has welcomed the Iranian women's football team into our hearts. These women are immensely popular in Australia, but we understand that they are in an extremely difficult situation due to the decisions they have to make. However, they will still have the opportunity to reach out to Australian officials if they wish to do so," Burke's words were reported by The Guardian.
