The players of the Latvian men's hockey team fought until the final siren in the match against Sweden, said the head coach of the Latvian team Harijs Vitolins in a conversation with journalists, according to LETA.
It was previously reported that the Latvian hockey players lost to Sweden 1-5 in the first round of the Olympic playoff match, in the battle for a place in the quarter-finals, finishing the tournament in tenth place.
"It cannot be said that the Swedes dominated in all lines. Yes, they used their quality and the moments they had, but at the same time, we could have held on to the game at the end of the second period when there were several moments, including good opportunities in the power play," said Vitolins.
"The guys fought until the last and did not let go of the game. We know we were playing against the best hockey players in the world. It cannot be said that we failed. In matches against strong teams, the realization of chances is necessary," he continued.
The Latvian hockey players finished the tournament with one win in three group stage matches and a loss in the battle for a place in the quarter-finals. Vitolins emphasized that it is important to appreciate that all the top players from the National Hockey League (NHL) participated in the Olympic Games in Milan.
"First of all, [we need to appreciate] that we were among the best hockey players in the world and played more or less on equal terms. Also, in the game against the Danes, if we exclude those three conceded goals, for 50 minutes we did everything, dominated, and showed fighting spirit. Yes, we did not score the goals that were necessary for a tie. At the same time, we played all the matches from start to finish, selflessly. This is the Olympics, where you enjoy being among the best hockey players," the coach explained.
The Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina will last until February 22.
