Latvian goalkeeper Elvis Merzlikins is using the last matches of the National Hockey League (NHL) as preparation for the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, he admitted in a conversation with journalists, LETA reports.

It was previously reported that Merzlikins' team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on the road on Tuesday. The Latvian goalkeeper saved 24 shots on his goal and recorded his first shutout of the season.

"It’s a nice feeling for both the team and me personally. Thinking about the Olympics, it’s an opportunity to prepare for the big show I’ve always dreamed of," Merzlikins noted after the victory.

He admitted that he tries to view the last matches with the Blue Jackets as preparatory games before the Olympics.

"I’m treating the last games as exhibition matches before the Olympics. Of course, I’m playing for my club, but I’m already trying to imagine that I’m there and trying to catch the rhythm. Once I get there, there will be little time. There will be only one exhibition match against Switzerland, which will serve as practice. Nothing more," explained the Latvian goalkeeper.

About four weeks ago, Rick Bowness became the new head coach of the Blue Jackets, and Merzlikins noted that it has become easier to play under his guidance.

"We’re putting more pressure on the opponent, the players are better at clearing space in front of the goal, Jetty [Jett Grieves] and I see the puck better, and that makes life easier for us. The changes have given us new energy," said Merzlikins. "Every point is important for us; we want to get there," he added.

In the Eastern Conference standings, the Blue Jackets are in ninth place with 63 points after 55 games. On Wednesday, the Columbus team will play its last match before the Olympic break, hosting the Chicago Blackhawks.
