Latvia's top player Alena Ostapenko will play in the first round of the WTA 500 singles tournament in Abu Dhabi today against Russian Oksana Selekmetyeva, reports LETA.
The match on the main court will start no earlier than 15:00 Latvian time.
Ostapenko is seeded seventh and is ranked 24th in the WTA rankings. Selekmetyeva, who made it to the main draw through two qualifying rounds, is in 101st place.
The tennis players will meet on the court for the first time. The winner will advance to the second round, where she will play against American Ashlyn Krueger (WTA 62) or Czech Sara Bejlek (WTA 89).
Ostapenko is participating in the tournament in Abu Dhabi for the third time. Last year, she lost in the first round, succumbing in two sets to Tunisian Ons Jabeur. For Selekmetyeva, this is her debut at the tournament in Abu Dhabi.
The Latvian tennis player will also compete in the doubles event alongside Czech Barbora Krejcikova. In the first round, the duo from Czech Republic and Latvia will face Russian Lyudmila Samsonova and Chinese Xu Yifan.
The tournament in Abu Dhabi is held on hard courts and will conclude on Saturday.
