Latvia's top-ranked player Alena Ostapenko, paired with Taiwanese tennis player Shu-Wei Hseih, advanced to the third round (Round of 16) of the doubles competition at the Australian Open without a fight on Friday, reports LETA.
In the second round, Ostapenko and Se's opponents — Serbian Olga Danilovic and Austrian Anastasia Potapova — did not come onto the court.
For reaching the Round of 16, Ostapenko received 240 points in the WTA doubles rankings.
It was previously reported that in the first round, the Latvian-Taiwanese duo, seeded third, defeated Australian Olivia Gadecki and American Desiree Krawczyk with a score of 7-5, 6-2.
To reach the quarterfinals, Ostapenko and Se will face either Czech Maria Bouzkova and Slovenian Andreja Klepac or the 13th seeds — American Sofia Kenin and German Laura Siegemund.
As previously reported, in singles, Ostapenko (WTA 24) advanced past the first round but lost in the second in three sets to Chinese player Wang Xinyu (WTA 43).
Ostapenko is participating in the Australian Open for the 11th time. Her best result in singles is reaching the quarterfinals in 2023. Last year, she was eliminated in the first round of the singles tournament but reached the doubles final for the second consecutive year.
In the final of the women's doubles at the Australian Open 2023, Ostapenko and Se lost to Czech Katerina Siniakova and American Taylor Townsend, seeded first, with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (7:4), 3-6 in the current tournament.
