Early Signs of Brain Aging: What Behavioral Changes in Older Dogs Should Not Be Ignored

Decreased activity, increased anxiety, disruption of the usual daily routine, or minor problems with orientation in a familiar home in older pets may be early signs of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS) — a neurodegenerative condition often compared to Alzheimer's disease in humans.

A new study emphasizes that owners often dismiss such changes as 'just old age,' missing critically important time for intervention. Possible causes of CCDS include the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain, oxidative stress, and reduced cerebral blood flow.

Although this condition is considered irreversible, early diagnosis by a veterinarian — including the exclusion of other diseases such as arthritis — as well as the prescription of a special diet enriched with antioxidants and fatty acids, mental exercises, and, in some cases, medications can significantly slow the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life for the pet.
