On Tuesday, January 13, Manchester United announced on their official website the appointment of Michael Carrick as the head coach of the team until the end of the current season.
Recall that on January 5, the club announced the departure of Ruben Amorim from the position of head coach. The Portuguese worked with Manchester United from November 11, 2024, to January 5, 2026.
Carrick played for the Red Devils from 2006 to 2018. During this period, the former midfielder participated in 464 matches in all competitions, scoring 24 goals and providing 35 assists. Before his appointment at Manchester United, the 44-year-old specialist managed Middlesbrough.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also a candidate for the position of Manchester United coach, but the club rejected the idea of appointing him as he viewed the job as a long-term project. The Norwegian wanted to carry out a full rebuild that would take years, which did not suit the Manchester leadership. This was reported by journalist and insider David Ornstein for Sky Sports. According to the source, Carrick was willing to take the position of head coach of Manchester United only until the end of the current season.
Ornstein also notes that for the bosses of the Red Devils, Solskjaer embodies the past. Likely, the club's management believed that his return would be a step backward. In the case of Carrick's appointment, such a feeling arises less.
