Amid the excitement surrounding the 2026 World Cup, Republican President Donald Trump stated on Friday that American football should be renamed, as it is the round ball game that is the real football.
"We have a little conflict with another game called football, but if you think about it, that is the real football, no doubt about it. We need to come up with a new name for the NFL (National Football League)," Trump said at the draw for the group stage of the World Cup.
"If you think about it, it really doesn’t make sense."
For Americans, the word "football" refers to American football – a sport played primarily with hands and fundamentally different from what the rest of the world calls football.
Almost the entire country follows the NFL championship final – the Super Bowl – every year, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized on Friday for Americans that the 2026 World Cup will be equivalent to 104 Super Bowls.
Trump, known as a versatile sports enthusiast, has developed a particular love for football, and this attachment is only growing ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
