Another wave of arrests in Turkey over match-fixing and betting

A large-scale investigation into illegal betting and possible match-fixing continues in Turkey. Law enforcement agencies conducted a new wave of arrests, issuing warrants for the arrest of 47 individuals.

Among them are 27 football players suspected of betting on their own teams' matches.

According to Haberler, the list includes Mert Hakan Yalçın (Fenerbahçe), Metekan Baltacı (Galatasaray), as well as players from Trabzonspor, Konyaspor, and other Super Lig clubs.

Club management representatives are also under suspicion: owners, presidents, and coaches whose teams may have been involved in match-fixing have been detained. In particular, this concerns the matches Ankara Spor – Nazilli Belediyespor (April 2024) and Umudajspor – Giresunspor (December 2023).

Previously, the Turkish Football Federation had already suspended over 1,000 players from various divisions for betting. Among them are 27 Super Lig players, including players from Beşiktaş and Galatasaray. Additionally, 17 referees have been arrested, and another 149 officials have been temporarily suspended.
