Washington forward Alexander Ovechkin scored his 904th goal in NHL regular seasons, marking a goal in a home game against Edmonton (7-4).
The 40-year-old forward scored in the seventh minute of the match, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Capitals. This allowed Ovechkin to match another scoring record of the great Canadian Wayne Gretzky.
Of his 904 goals, Ovechkin has scored 66 into empty nets — he holds the NHL record for this statistic.
At the same time, Gretzky scored 894 goals during his career, of which 56 were into empty nets. Thus, both legendary hockey players now have 838 goals in NHL regular seasons, excluding goals into empty nets.
