The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced the creation of a World Prize, which will be awarded for the first time during the draw for the final tournament of the World Cup in December in Washington, LETA reports, citing AP.
This award, named the "FIFA World Prize," will be given for "outstanding activities in the name of peace," the main football organization announced on Wednesday. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, declined to answer whether Trump would be the first recipient of this award.
"You will all see on December 5," Infantino said at the American Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, shortly after Trump spoke at the same event.
Infantino also emphasized that "in an increasingly troubled and divided world, it is important to recognize the outstanding contributions of those who work hard to end conflicts and unite people in the spirit of peace." According to FIFA, the award, which will be presented this year by Infantino himself, will be given annually "on behalf of fans from around the world."
Last month, Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize, despite lobbying from Republican colleagues, various world leaders, and himself. In his speech on Wednesday, Infantino did not hide the connection between himself, FIFA, and Trump.
"I am really lucky. I have a great relationship with President Trump, whom I consider a truly close friend," Infantino said. "He has certainly provided great support in everything we do in connection with the World Cup. He has incredible energy, and that is something I truly admire. He does what he says. He says what he thinks. In fact, he says what many think but perhaps do not dare to say. And that is why he is so successful."
FIFA recently appointed Trump’s daughter Ivanka to the board of a $100 million educational project, which is partially funded by ticket sales for the 2026 World Cup final tournament.
As Infantino noted at the forum, the World Cup draw and the presentation of the World Prize will attract around one billion viewers worldwide.
