In preparation for the Saeima elections, the main task has been accomplished - to prepare the electronic online voter register for operation, said the Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Maris Zviedris to reporters on Wednesday.
He noted that about a month ago, various options were being considered in case this system was not ready for operation, but now, thanks to the participation of state companies and active work, the main element of the electoral infrastructure has been developed, and its testing is planned to be completed in the coming days.
According to the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC), the implementation of other technical solutions for the elections is also proceeding as planned. The module for submitting candidate lists for deputies is already operational, although it was not launched within the initially scheduled timeframe - one month before June 20.
By June 30, it is planned to complete other important components of the electoral system, including voting process logs and vote counting protocols. The CEC notes that the most critical functionalities are being developed on schedule, while less significant improvements that do not directly affect the organization of the elections can be finalized in the weeks following this deadline.
It is expected that after the completion of system development in mid-July, the CEC will begin conducting workshops in municipal electoral commissions to familiarize them with the new solutions in practice. Developers of the systems are also expected to be involved in these outreach events. By the end of August, the CEC intends to meet with representatives of all municipal electoral commissions.
The CEC also emphasizes that all system tests are already in the final stages, and no additional large-scale testing is planned.
The elections for the 15th Saeima will take place on October 3.
As reported, at the end of April, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to transfer the development of the electoral system to state-owned enterprises LLC "Latvijas mobilais telefons" (LMT), LLC "Tet", and JSC "Latvijas valsts meži" (LVM), while the contract with the previous developer of the electoral platform "RIX Technologies" was terminated.
