"The competition" for who will become the prime minister during the pre-election period will soon begin.
The Union of Greens and Farmers convened an emergency meeting to discuss the situation following the decision of the "Progressives" party to effectively leave the Silinie government. De facto, the government no longer exists, as acknowledged today in a communication with the media by the chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Union of Greens and Farmers, Harijs Rokpelnis. According to rumors, the board of "New Unity" may hold its meeting this evening. Logically, party members may suggest that Evika Silina resign and not wait for the parliament to express no confidence in her - at the initiative of the opposition.
Despite the fact that there are less than 5 months until the elections, there will surely be those willing to lead the pre-election government. Firstly, this government will work for at least 5 months, and possibly longer, considering that the new Saeima will hold its first session in early November, and it is still uncertain whether politicians will manage to form a new government by that time. Experience shows that usually a new government appears one or two months after the new parliament begins its work. Thus, the pre-election government could last for six months or even longer... Likely candidates for the position of prime minister are Maris Kucinskis from the United List, Viktors Valainis from the Union of Greens and Farmers, and Ilze Indrikson. Since "New Unity" essentially dismantled its own government, it is unlikely that they will receive the prime minister's post again. Although other right-wing politicians may decide that let "New Unity" drink this bitter cup to the dregs until the elections...
Is there a scenario in which the "Progressives" could be part of the new government? Currently, such scenarios do not seem to be on the horizon. The National Alliance and the United List refused to join the government 2.5 years ago to avoid working with the "Progressives". And the "Greens and Farmers" have already had their fill of cooperation with the "Progressives" in the current government. There are no options for negotiations with the "Progressives" and the deputies of the "Latvia First" party.
