In the event of the government resigning, it is the president who plays a key role in proposing a candidate for prime minister.
The head of state did not rush and scheduled a rendezvous with representatives of all parliamentary factions only for Friday. It is clear that Edgars Rinkēvičs is taking a pause to see how events will unfold this evening and tomorrow. Specifically: will Evika Silina resign on her own or will parliament 'ask her to leave'? Or will politicians come up with some other, possibly unexpected scenarios? In any case, by Friday the situation will largely clarify, and the president will be able to understand whether a new ruling majority is already forming or not.
It should be noted that according to the Constitution, it is the president who has the exclusive right to propose a candidate for prime minister and to entrust them with forming a government, after which they can seek a mandate of trust from the Saeima.
