The European Union will not evacuate its staff from Kyiv due to the threat from Russia to strike the Ukrainian capital in the event of an attack on the Moscow parade, stated a representative of the EU's foreign policy service Anuar El-Anuni.

“The public threats from Russia to strike Kyiv are part of its reckless tactics to escalate the conflict. As for us, the EU, we will not change either our position or our presence in Kyiv,” said El-Anuni.

It is clear that Latvia will follow the example of the European Union and will also refrain from evacuating its diplomatic mission from the capital of Ukraine.

But why has the question of evacuation arisen at all? As reported by bb.lv, the Russian side sent a note to all accredited diplomatic missions urging them to ensure the evacuation of embassy staff in Kyiv. Among the accredited missions is the Latvian embassy in Russia.

The current Ambassador of Latvia to Ukraine is Andris Pildegovich. He took up this position in 2025, succeeding Ilgvars Kļava.

Russia threatens to strike “decision-making centers” in Kyiv if Ukraine strikes the May 9 parade in Moscow.
