The Prime Minister will demand explanations from the State Fire and Rescue Service regarding the 112.lv website: it crashed after reports of a drone threat

Prime Minister Evika Silina will demand explanations from the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRS) regarding the technical capacity of the "112.lv" website after the sending of Cell Broadcast messages in the Balvi and Ludza regions, according to her statement on Twitter, LETA reports.

As previously reported by the agency, shortly after the emergency messages were sent out, information about the nature of the threat and actions for residents of the relevant areas was available on the "112.lv" website. However, later the site temporarily stopped working, making it impossible to access this information.

The Prime Minister thanked the services for the timely warning to residents and their readiness to respond, but noted that she expects explanations from the State Fire and Rescue Service regarding the technical capacity of the website by Tuesday, March 31.

As reported, on Monday evening, the Latvian army detected a foreign drone near the Latvian-Russian border, close to the territories of the Ludza and Balvi regions, after which the emergency alert system was activated to inform residents.

The drone did not enter Latvian airspace. After it was removed from the border, a message was sent through the emergency alert system indicating the end of the threat.

Several residents of the Balvi region confirmed to the LETA agency that they received notifications on their mobile phones both about the presence of a threat and its conclusion, but they were unable to open the "112.lv" website for more detailed information.

As previously reported, last week drones flew into all three Baltic countries and exploded. They were likely aimed at targets in Russia during the defense of Ukraine against Russian aggression, but went off course or were diverted by electronic warfare systems.

One of the drones entered Latvian airspace from the direction of Russia on Wednesday night and exploded in the Kraslava region about a kilometer from the center of the Svarini parish, while another briefly entered from Belarus and headed towards Russia.

Following this, a public discussion unfolded about the need to timely inform residents in such cases using emergency messages. The State Fire and Rescue Service had previously reported that the relevant text of the warning about the threat in the airspace was already prepared.
