Commentators reacted to today’s government decision.
As is known, today the government considered and approved the request of airBaltic for an urgent loan of 30 million, which must be repaid by August 31 of this year.
Commentators on social media reacted quite angrily to this government decision.
"Once again, the Prosecutor General’s Office will have something to do; it’s crazier than in the 'woodworking case' - both misleading the Cabinet and state support, only here Shuvaev is unlikely to be as active," wrote political scientist Jurģis Liepnieks, reminding that the leader of the parliamentary faction "Progressives" Andris Šuvajevs had addressed the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the legality of the government’s decision to support the woodworking industry.
"This is, indeed, an open misleading of the Cabinet of Ministers. The problems of airBaltic are now not only due to the shock of the fuel market," believes former minister Juris Pūce.
"This is NOT a loan. It will definitely never be repaid. In the short term, it is simply impossible to return any money burned this summer. And they know this," warned economist Guntars Vitols.
Most likely, the debt will be converted into other financial instruments, such as worthless shares or long-term debts.
The loan is structured as short-term only so that it can be borrowed cheaper than today’s market rate of about 50%.
