Any trade restrictions with Russia make sense only when it is clear why they are being implemented. According to NRA commentator Ben Latkovskis, there is often talk in Latvia about the need to reduce trade with Russia, but rarely is there an explanation of what specific goal this should achieve.
Immediately after the war began, many hoped that sanctions would seriously impact the Russian economy and force Moscow to change its policy. However, after several years, it became clear that such an effect did not occur. Therefore, the author believes that sanctions today serve more as a political and moral signal — a way to show the attitude towards Russian aggression.
As for the unilateral restrictions from Latvia, the author believes their impact on Russia is minimal. Russian goods and routes are simply redirected through other countries. Therefore, it is not reasonable to speak of significant economic damage to Russia in this case.
At the same time, Latkovskis does not call for maintaining the previous level of cooperation with Russia. He merely suggests honestly acknowledging that if the restrictions are not intended to inflict significant damage on Russia, then it is necessary to openly state their real - domestic political - goals.
The author believes that instead of emotional slogans, practical questions should be discussed: how such decisions will affect the Latvian economy, which sectors will lose income, which may benefit from reorienting to other markets, and what long-term advantages the country may gain.
He cites Liepaja and Ventspils as examples. In both cases, painful changes in the economy ultimately led to a restructuring of the economic model and the emergence of new development opportunities.
The main conclusion of the author is that trade restrictions with Russia should be assessed not only from a political standpoint but also as an economic strategy. For this, specific calculations, clear goals, and figures are necessary, rather than just emotional statements and political declarations.
