Latvia has not received invitations or requests to participate in the military operation of the United States and Israel in the Middle East, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics told reporters on Wednesday after a meeting at the Riga Castle with Prime Minister Evika Silina.

According to him, if Latvia receives such an invitation, it will be responsibly and quickly considered through consultations with the responsible ministries, the government, and the Saeima. The President of Latvia noted that any decisions regarding the deployment of military contingents fall within the competence of the Saeima.

Rinkevics added that the actions of the United States and Israel in the Middle East are understandable, given Iran's role - its nuclear program, threats to neighboring countries, and support for Russia in its aggression against Ukraine.

He believes that global events are interconnected, and Russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the Middle East, should be viewed comprehensively by Europe and the United States. He emphasized that Europe must find ways to support its allies, even though these are sometimes difficult decisions. Rinkevics added that everyone expects clear involvement from the United States regarding Ukraine. The President noted that both NATO and the EU should seek points of contact rather than emphasize differences.

It has already been reported that the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has led to a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world's oil is transported, and a sharp rise in prices.
