EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas commented on the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed as a result of an Israeli strike.
“The death of Ali Khamenei is a turning point in the history of Iran. What comes next is still unclear. But now a path is open to a different Iran, where its people may gain more freedom for self-determination,” said Kaja Kallas.
Kallas added that she is in contact with partners, “including those in the region most affected by Iran’s military actions,” to find steps for de-escalating the situation.
After the death of Ali Khamenei, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that his assassination “is perceived as an open declaration of war against Muslims, and particularly Shiites, around the world.” Russian President Vladimir Putin called it “a murder committed with a cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law.”
