The highest officials of Latvia - President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, and Foreign Minister Baiba Braže - called on the residents of the country today at 9:00 to join a minute of silence in memory of the victims and in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who have been resisting the full-scale war unleashed by Russia for four years, the Saeima press service reported to LETA.
Officials emphasized that since 2014, Russia has been trying to destroy Ukraine and deprive it of its independence, and on February 24, 2022, the aggression escalated into a full-scale invasion, continuing to devastate the lives of Ukrainians. Despite the deaths of civilians and the destruction of cities and villages, the Ukrainian people continue their selfless struggle for the future of their country.
Officials highlighted that this war is being fought not only for territory but also for the right of the people to live in a free and independent country, for European security and a common future. Latvia declares its unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom, self-determination, and human dignity, and advocates for ensuring a just and lasting peace.
