It is planned to invest €228 million in the development of the military base 'Seliya' in the Sēja municipality of Aizkraukle district, the Ministry of Defense reported to the LETA agency.
The development of the military base is planned based on a public-private partnership model.
Residential and administrative zones, a dining hall, a medical center, auxiliary buildings, warehouses, parking lots, a gym, and a sports field will be built on the base, along with a checkpoint, fencing, as well as heating and water supply systems. The total area of the base will be 163 hectares. The completion of construction is scheduled for 2029-2030.
It is planned that members of the National Defense Service (NDS) will be permanently stationed at the base. The accommodation of military personnel from other countries will be organized in accordance with the initiatives of allies and the development of the base.
Currently, allied forces and NDS personnel can use the territory of the training ground for exercises.
Overall, the expenses for the development of the training ground in Seliya will amount to €303 million. The project is being implemented by the State Real Estate Management Company (Valsts nekustamie īpašumi) on behalf of the Ministry of Defense.
As reported, last week a shooting range was opened at the training ground, marking an important milestone in the development of Latvia's defense infrastructure.
The training ground is already actively used - tactical and engineering exercises, movement of armored vehicles, aircraft flights, and training in the management of unmanned aerial vehicles take place on its territory. Since June 2025, a drone testing center has been operating at the training ground, where international drone and counter-drone system tests are conducted.
