In the coming months, the location of the Rheinmetall ammunition production facility in Latvia will be announced, said Defense Minister Andris Spruds.
He noted that potential sites for the plant have already been identified, and it remains only to choose exactly where it will be located.
Spruds predicts that the ammunition plant could be built by 2028. It also took two years to implement the project for the production of modular powder shells in Iecava.
Ingrida Kirse, a board member of the State Defense Corporation, also told the LETA agency that the site for the plant has not yet been chosen. Intensive work is currently underway with Rheinmetall to prepare the project - the model of cooperation and site selection are being discussed.
According to Kirse's forecasts, Rheinmetall may start construction of the ammunition plant in early 2027.
In September last year, a memorandum of understanding was signed in Germany for the establishment of the Rheinmetall ammunition production facility in Latvia.
A press release on the Rheinmetall website states that the investment in the construction of the plant will amount to 275 million euros.
