The Minister for Local Government demanded that the mayor of Ogre explain why he is performing his duties without access to state secrets

The Minister for Local Government demanded that the mayor of Ogre explain why he is performing his duties without the legally required special access to state secrets.

Riga, January 29, LETA. The Minister of Smart Governance and Regional Development, Raimonds Čudars, demanded that the chairman of the Ogre City Council, Egils Helmanis, explain why he is performing the duties of mayor without the legally required special access to state secrets.

As reported to LETA by the minister's advisor, Sabīne Spurke, according to the law on local governments, the chairman of the council is obliged to provide an explanation within five working days after receiving the request. If the explanation is not provided within this period, it is considered a refusal to provide an explanation.

Today, the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development noted that the mayor of Ogre, Helmanis, is performing his official duties, although he does not have access to state secrets.

Today, the Ogre City Council met for the first time in a long time under the chairmanship of Helmanis. At the beginning of the meeting, the mayor announced that he had returned to performing his duties.

Helmanis, while on sick leave, remained the only local government leader in Latvia who had not requested access to state secrets. He stated that he would complete these formalities as soon as his health allowed.
