A detailed plan is currently being developed that will ensure the immediate destruction of roads and railways at the eastern border if necessary, said Defense Minister Andris Spruds on the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama."
"If the military threat increases, we do not rule out the dismantling of roads and railways," said the minister.
Spruds explained that both the Military Council and the Ministry of Transport summarized data on this issue. "It is clear that the main principles are obvious. No military wagon of the occupiers will pass through the territory of Latvia," the minister commented on whether strengthening the eastern border includes the destruction of tracks on the border with Russia and Belarus.
As reported earlier, the Saeima rejected a proposal from the National Alliance that provided for the dismantling of railway infrastructure at the Latvian-Russian border.
Several Latvian ministries and security agencies have been tasked with preparing a conclusion by the end of 2025 on what impact the dismantling of tracks in the border area with Russia will have on Latvia. In addition, the presidents of the Baltic states stated that such a decision should be joint.
