Germany and Latvia share a unified opinion that Russia poses a threat to Euro-Atlantic security and must be deterred by all possible means, stated Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže while hosting German Foreign Minister Johann Waidfeld on Monday.

Braže also touched upon the topic of German military presence in the region, including the deployment of a German brigade in Lithuania and the participation of air forces in NATO's air defense in the Baltic region.

For his part, Waidfeld emphasized Germany's solidarity with Latvia and other Baltic states, noting Germany's contribution to ensuring the security of NATO's eastern flank, including the deployment of a brigade in Lithuania, participation in the control of Baltic airspace, and security measures in the Baltic Sea.

The German Foreign Minister particularly highlighted the historical responsibility, stating that the German occupation of Latvia in 1941 was accompanied by violent extermination, forced labor, and the murder of the Jewish population.

Waidfeld did not mention the killing of civilians of other nationalities.

However, he noted that Germany is one of Latvia's most important trading partners. More than 1,200 German companies operate in Latvia. He also emphasized the importance of Latvian youth learning the German language.
