In response to the sanctions imposed by Trump, eight European countries issued a stern statement – that U.S. President Donald Trump is undermining transatlantic relations. And what about Latvia?

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina wrote on platform X that "Latvia supports this statement" and attached a link to a short text signed by European countries against which Trump imposed 25% tariffs yesterday. All these countries sent their military to Greenland after Trump declared claims to this land.

The Latvian authorities also wanted to send their military, but they were not invited. Riga was not invited to sign the anti-American statement of the eight countries, but Silina supported it.

Here is the statement signed by the authorities of Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom:

"As NATO members, we are committed to strengthening security in the Arctic as a common transatlantic interest. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise 'Arctic Resilience', conducted together with allies, meets this need. They pose no threat to anyone.

We express our full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process initiated last week, we are ready for dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which we firmly support.

Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and create the risk of a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to act in a coordinated and unified manner in our responses. We are committed to protecting our sovereignty."

This statement does not mention any retaliatory measures against the U.S. So far, Europe only voices "threats of undermining" and "the risk of a downward spiral". And promises to defend itself. How – we will see.
