"The Arctic is one of the issues that the USA considers when thinking about Greenland. It is necessary to seek a mutually acceptable and beneficial solution for both the USA and Greenland," emphasized Mūrniece, adding that the EU could also be involved in this dialogue.
Latvia's position regarding the Venezuelan crisis should be formulated with consideration of the country's long-term security interests, said Saeima deputy, chair of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee Ināra Mūrniece ("National Alliance") to LETA.
As Mūrniece explained, this means long-term work and cooperation with the USA - President Donald Trump and the US Congress, as well as with NATO allies and European Union (EU) countries, particularly Denmark, whose military personnel are currently present in significant numbers in Latvia.
The politician noted that the USA has security concerns, including in the context of Greenland. "The Arctic is one of the issues that the USA considers when thinking about Greenland. It is necessary to seek a mutually acceptable and beneficial solution for both the USA and Greenland," emphasized Mūrniece, adding that the EU could also be involved in this dialogue.
In response to a question regarding concerns that the USA might similarly use military force against Greenland, given the situation in Venezuela, Mūrniece stated that she does not want to speculate on various assumptions. She explained that Greenland and the illegitimate head of an authoritarian state - the usurped president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro - are completely different situations.
It was previously reported that on Saturday night, the USA unexpectedly carried out airstrikes on several targets in Venezuela. On Saturday morning, US President Donald Trump announced that the country's authoritarian leader Maduro and his wife had been removed from the country and would face trial in New York.
Trump stated that during the transition period, the USA would manage Venezuela - this has been entrusted to senior American officials. The vice president of Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez, has been appointed as the acting president of Venezuela.
The Trump administration claims it is ready to cooperate with the rest of Maduro's government until Washington's goals are achieved, including opening access to US investments in Venezuela's vast oil resources.
It was also reported that President Donald Trump's repeated statements that Greenland should become part of the USA drew international condemnation on Monday.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to annex Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, due to its strategic position. On Sunday, aboard the presidential plane "Air Force One" on the way from Florida to Washington, Trump reiterated that Greenland is necessary for the USA from a national security perspective.
The foreign ministers of the Baltic states stated on Monday after Trump's remarks that Greenland is an integral part of Denmark.
