Riga City Council Approved Additional Assistance for Residents Affected by the Explosion

The municipality will provide additional assistance to residents of the building on Bauskas Street, which was affected by the gas explosion — such a decision was made by the Riga Civil Defense Commission on Sunday.

The commission decided to extend the temporary accommodation period from five to 15 days. Affected residents will be able to move into municipal housing at 49 Unijas Street until they receive permanent housing, as well as stay with other service providers, the Riga City Council informed the LETA agency.

The commission also decided that the Riga municipal police will continue to guard the affected building until this function is taken over by the property manager or other solutions are found.

On Monday, January 5, at 17:00, the Housing and Environment Department will organize a meeting for apartment owners to discuss hiring a certified construction engineer to assess the condition of the building — to evaluate the damage and possible recovery scenarios. The department has already announced a price survey, and the municipality will cover the specialist's services.

All individuals whose living conditions were directly affected by the incident will receive a crisis allowance from the Social Service. Residents who are unable to retrieve their identification documents will also have the costs of their issuance covered by the municipality.

Chairman of the Riga City Council Viesturs Kleinbergs thanked all involved services during the commission meeting on Sunday, noting that the work was organized in a coordinated and high-level manner. "The most important thing now is to provide affected residents with decent housing, documents, and to pay the crisis allowance," the municipality quoted Kleinbergs.
