2025: 5 Failures of the Year

What went "wrong" in international and Latvian politics?

  1. The main failure of the year on the international stage is the collapse of efforts to achieve peace or at least a ceasefire in Ukraine. It seems that even the negotiators - primarily representatives from the United States and Ukraine - have forgotten how many times and where they gathered in the past year to discuss various options for a peace plan. The last attempt to make progress in the peace settlement was made literally on the eve of the Christmas holidays - Washington and Kyiv agreed on a 20-point plan. But it still needs to be approved by Moscow, which has already raised objections to several points... In any case, this year it was not possible to stop the terrible war in Europe.

  2. If we turn to the situation in Latvia, one of the failures of the year can be considered the government's failure to reduce food prices. Despite all the memorandums, food prices continued to rise, and Latvia was among the leaders in the EU for price growth specifically in food. Only by the end of the year did the growth of food prices slow down... But it is still too early to talk about a decrease in prices.

  3. The government's attempts to list airBaltic shares on the stock exchange and stabilize the financial situation of the airline have failed. Now the government is waiting for some alternative development plan for airBaltic from the national airline.

  4. The attempt to carry out a "coup" in the Riga City Council ended in failure. After the elections in June of this year, almost the same coalition came to power in the capital as after the previous elections!

  5. The attempt at a "political coup" on a national scale also ended in failure. The "No Parties" movement lasted only 2 months. The leader of the movement became disillusioned with the Latvian people, who did not appreciate or insufficiently appreciated the fixed idea - the rejection of parties and holding elections exclusively in single-member districts.
