The Saeima on Thursday appointed Armins Meisters, senior prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office, as Attorney General.
88 members of the Saeima voted for the appointment of Meisters, with no votes against.
Most factions represented in the Saeima, as well as the legal commission of the Saeima, previously expressed their support for Meisters.
According to the law, the Attorney General is appointed by the Saeima for a five-year term upon the proposal of the Council of Justice. The same person may hold the position of Attorney General for no more than two consecutive terms.
Meisters has served as the senior prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office since 2018. He has worked in various divisions of the prosecutor's office since 2000, including positions as senior prosecutor of the Central District Prosecutor's Office of Riga and senior prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of Financial and Economic Crimes.
As reported, in the repeated competition for the position of Attorney General, applications were submitted by the current Attorney General Juris Stukans, Constitutional Court judge and former prosecutor Juris Juriss, and former prosecutor of the specialized prosecutor's office for organized crime and other fields Janis Ilsteris, in addition to Meisters.
Stukans' term expired on July 11, but following the first competition in the spring of this year, a new Attorney General could not be selected as none of the three candidates received the support of the Council of Justice and were not nominated for approval in the Saeima.
