Rinkevics is the 'de facto' leader of the 'Unity' party and makes all the major decisions, this assertion is made by Gatis Eglitis on the portal.
"There is no such party as Zatlers! There never was! Zatlers has been a doctor his whole life, operated on knees, and only started engaging in politics after receiving support from the management at the Riga Zoo. The only vector for Zatlers in politics was to live in friendship with the Russian 'minority' and, if possible, to pull the 'Saskaņa' coalition in (the infamous phrase 'only tanks can change our decision').
From day one, Zatlers' party was conceived, created, and led by E. Rinkevics, the head of Zatlers' presidential office. A long-time political figure who has survived various oligarchic eras, cunning as a fox.
The launch of the new party was impressive — over 20% support in the elections to the 11th Saeima at the end of 2011. Then came the failure 'with tanks', several successful attacks by the 'foxes' from 'Unity', S. Aboltiņa against the 'Zatlers' supporters, and within a year the party literally fell apart.
'Unity' took several sinking 'Zatlers' supporters into its boat, and the next stage of E. Rinkevics' work began with his super-loyal women (E. Siliņa, Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica, G. Reire, I. Libina-Egnere, S. Sondore, etc.) — to infiltrate and, through cunning and intrigue, seize power in 'Unity'. The political growth and influence in 'Unity' is greatly aided by the perpetual position of Minister of Foreign Affairs (11 years): serious things are said to the people that are hard to understand but sound important.
After more than 10 years, 'Unity' can confidently be called E. Rinkevics' party — the other factions in 'Unity' (Civic Union, 'umbrellas', reirists, Ašerādens, V. Dombrovskis' loyalists, etc.) tremble in fear of the 'Zatlers' supporters. Similar to how the MAGA wing took over the Republican Party in the USA.
It is naive to think that E. Rinkevics, having renounced membership in 'Unity', became a politically independent 'observer' — president. I can say with great confidence that E. Rinkevics is the de facto leader of 'Unity' and makes all the major decisions.
