At the plenary session of the parliament on Thursday, the first language debates in the modern history of Latvia will take place, based on a report presented by the Ministry of Education on the current state and future of the state language policy. The debates will be opened by the Minister of Education, Daiga Melbarde, and a speech on the protection and development of the Latvian language is scheduled by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mierina. Among those registered to participate in the debates are the Minister of Culture, Agnes Lace, and deputies from 'New Unity'... It is clear that by Thursday, the list of those wishing to speak about the state language from the Saeima podium will significantly expand.
It should be noted that the Saeima holds annual debates on international politics and economics. Now, language debates have been added, which will, however, take place every two years.
Also at the upcoming meeting, deputies will consider a request from the National Alliance regarding the excessively slow process of revoking Petr Aven's Latvian citizenship.
Deputies will also discuss a public initiative regarding the allocation of profits from 'Latvenergo' for the treatment of cancer patients.
The Saeima plans to adopt very important amendments to the Law on Residential Property in the final reading, which will allow apartment owners to create a 'community of owners' and thus this new legal entity will have the right to take loans for reconstruction and repair of the building.
