The agenda includes both the budget package and the popular initiative.
Tomorrow, the deputies will face a rather long working day. First, during an extraordinary session, the parliamentarians will submit to the Saeima committees the draft budget for 2026, the main parameters of the state budget for 2026, 2027, and 2028, and a package of bills related to the state budget, including amendments related to the pension reform based on years of service. Since this concerns the adoption of these documents in the zero reading, that is, the transfer to the committee, the debates at the initial stage will be very short according to the regulations—one deputy can speak 'for' and one 'against.' The main debates on budget issues are planned for a couple of weeks later when this entire package of bills will be submitted to the plenary session for conceptual adoption, that is, in the first reading.
After the extraordinary session of the Saeima, a regular session is scheduled. On the agenda is the discussion of a document that, according to the right-wing opposition, is intended to replace the Istanbul Convention—this refers to the Declaration on the Prevention and Eradication of Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence. The declaration was signed by deputies from the National Alliance and the United List, as well as by Juris Jakovins from the Union of Greens and Farmers and independent deputy Oleg Burov.
The deputies will also discuss and submit to the education committee a popular initiative against the Ministry of Education's plans to shorten summer school vacations. The authors of the initiative believe that it is unacceptable to 'steal childhood from children,' especially considering our climatic features with very few truly sunny, warm days.
The deputies will surely support the consideration of the amendments from the 'Progressive' faction to 'turn' officials into public servants and thus require them to fill out an annual income declaration, including heads of bureaus, as well as advisors to mayors, deputy mayors, and executive directors of municipalities.
