The Minister of Economics does not lose hope of achieving a reduction in food prices.
The head of the Ministry of Economics, Viktor Valainis (Union of Greens and Farmers), stated in an interview with TV-24 that Latvia should follow Denmark's path and try to create fierce competition among traders. "Let them engage in price dumping, let them compete with each other for the right to be considered the store with the cheapest products!" the Minister of Economics explained his idea.
In his opinion, a special information portal will soon be launched, which will provide the opportunity to compare prices for products in different retail chains in real-time. Viktor Valainis hopes that this will compel our major retail chains and others to compete with each other, and then prices for products will go down...
This statement from the minister also indicates that he and his team have apparently abandoned the fixed idea of trying to regulate prices through strict laws in a market economy. This method will definitely not yield the desired effect - unless it only leads to shortages of certain products.
