In the coming weekend, ultraviolet radiation in Latvia will intensify. Experts warn that at midday, the level of solar activity will reach values at which people with sensitive skin can get burned in just 20 minutes.

Against the backdrop of warm and sunny weather, residents of Latvia are urged to be more cautious about sun exposure. In the coming days, an increase in ultraviolet radiation is expected, which may pose a danger to the skin and eyes.

According to the European Space Agency, from June 20 to 22, the amount of ozone in the stratosphere over Latvia will decrease from the current 360–380 to 320–340 Dobson units.

As a result, the atmosphere will be less effective at blocking solar ultraviolet radiation, and its intensity at the Earth's surface will increase.

Forecasts indicate that during sunny weather, the ultraviolet radiation index at midday will reach at least level six. This means that from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended.

Particularly cautious should be those with fair skin, light or red hair, a lot of freckles, as well as those who have previously experienced sunburns. According to experts, people with sensitive skin can get sunburned in about 20 minutes without protective measures.

What is important to know: even if the air temperature feels comfortable, the risk of skin damage is determined not by heat, but by the level of ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, one can get burned even on a relatively cool day.

Using sunscreen, wearing a hat, and limiting sun exposure during the hottest hours can help reduce the risk.

Experts particularly recommend paying attention to children, as their skin is much more sensitive to ultraviolet exposure.

It is important to protect not only the skin but also the eyes. For this, it is recommended to use quality sunglasses. Additionally, it should be remembered that water, light sand, and other light surfaces reflect a significant portion of sunlight, enhancing the effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Experts remind that the highest levels of ultraviolet radiation in Latvia are observed annually in June and the first half of July.

Sunburns are considered one of the main risk factors for the development of malignant skin tumors, so at the beginning of the tanning season, it is recommended to gradually increase the time spent in the sun rather than spending hours under it from the first warm days.

With the upcoming Ligo holidays, this warning is particularly relevant, as many residents plan to spend the weekend outdoors.
