Midweek, the weather in Latvia will sharply deteriorate — meteorologists predict strong northwestern winds, downpours, possible hail, and temperatures significantly below normal for the end of May.
After a relatively calm start to the week, colder and windier weather will arrive in Latvia.
Meteorologists warn that starting Wednesday, the northwestern wind will significantly strengthen — gusts in some places may reach 15–20 meters per second. Forecasts suggest that such winds could break individual trees and cause localized damage.
At the same time, periodic rains are expected across the country, with heavy downpours in many areas. Thunderstorms and hail are possible in some places. The most precipitation is forecasted for the eastern part of Latvia, while the driest weather is expected in western Kurzeme.
Air temperatures will also be noticeably lower than usual for the end of May. On Wednesday and Thursday, daytime temperatures will only warm up to +11…+15 degrees. For late spring, this is closer to cool autumn weather than early summer.
On Tuesday night, in some areas of the northeast of the country, temperatures may drop to +6 degrees. Even during the day, the maximum temperature on Tuesday will only reach +15…+20 degrees.
The gusty winds will persist into Friday, although the weather will begin to gradually improve.
Meteorologists also warn that by the weekend, as the wind weakens and the sky clears, the risk of frost will increase.
This is especially important for gardeners and vegetable plot owners, as the end of May is usually considered a safe period for heat-loving plants.
According to current forecasts, Sunday may become the warmest day of the week. However, a stable arrival of summer warmth is not yet expected. According to long-term forecasts, in the first week of June, the weather in the region will continue to be influenced by a cyclone — this means more rain and moderate air temperatures.
