Health-conscious influencer Anete Kuznetsova shared a frightening story on social media about how she nearly suffocated after choking on a piece of cheese. At that moment, the woman was home alone.
“I could already imagine how the children would come back from school and find their mother cold on the kitchen floor…” she wrote.
According to Anete, everything happened suddenly: she took a sharp breath while eating, and a piece of cheese got stuck in her airways. At the last moment, she managed to cough and clear her breathing.
She stated that the scariest part is when such panic starts and you can’t breathe, and you forget what number to call for an ambulance.
After the publication, dozens of comments appeared under the post from people who had experienced similar situations.
“I have a phobia of shashlik. Recently, my colleague's husband choked on raw shashlik — he decided to try the marinade and suffocated… The people nearby couldn’t do anything, it was stuck too deep. The ambulance doctors said that only a cut in the throat and a tube for air could have saved him while they were on the way. But what ordinary person could do that…” one user wrote in the comments.
“One time I choked on a piece of chocolate (!!!) in front of several people. That process is so unpleasant and panic-inducing, and the reaction of those around you is so alarming that I became much more cautious afterward. It’s better to eat calmly and slowly than to end up in such a situation,” one discussion participant wrote.
“I was eating a piece of chocolate like a lollipop. It was too sweet in my throat or something like that — I think many will understand that feeling… and in the end, I choked, literally as if on air — I choked out of nowhere,” another woman shared her experience.
One user reminded about the Heimlich maneuver, which can be attempted even when alone.
“Clench your hand into a fist and place it thumb-side up between your navel and rib cage — in the area of the solar plexus. With your other hand, help make sharp thrusts upward into your abdomen. You can also lean sharply against the edge of a table or any other hard surface in that area.”
Some shared that they saved themselves by inducing the gag reflex, while others admitted that after such incidents, they are afraid to eat alone.
“It’s terrifying. I noticed that you need to eat slowly and mindfully. Once, a fish bone got seriously stuck in my throat when I was alone — it was very scary. Since then, I don’t eat fish alone,” one discussion participant wrote.
