Residents of various regions in Latvia may notice increased movement of military equipment and drone activity in the coming days. NATO exercises Spring Warrior are ongoing in the country, during which allies are practicing the rapid movement of troops and equipment.

According to the multinational NATO brigade in Latvia, from today until May 10, an artillery battalion group will be transporting military equipment by rail from Garkalne in the Ropaži municipality to Zaluji in the Augšdaugava municipality.

The military explains that one of the main objectives of the exercises is to test the ability to quickly redeploy units across the country and improve coordination among allied armies.

During the loading and unloading of equipment, there may be temporary traffic restrictions near railway crossings and access roads. Drivers are asked to take this into account when planning their routes.

Simultaneously, until May 15, training with the use of drones will continue in Latvia. These exercises are taking place in Latgale, Riga, Vidzeme, and Zemgale.

Drones can be spotted in the vicinity of Daugavpils, Rēzekne, Gulbene, Jēkabpils, and Luzna, as well as in the areas of Alūksne, Madona, Preiļi, Varakļāni, and Līvāni. The exercises are taking place both at military training grounds and in forested areas.

Mainly small and medium-range FPV drones are being used — such unmanned aerial vehicles are actively employed in modern warfare in Ukraine. NATO emphasizes that all aircraft used in the exercises are unarmed, and their flights are coordinated with the responsible authorities.

The National Armed Forces separately noted that they are capable of identifying all allied drones participating in the exercises, and their use is monitored and coordinated.

In light of recent incidents involving drones at the eastern border, attention to any drone activity in Latvia has noticeably increased.
