“Close the windows, seek shelter!” – at night, the Latvian army declared an air alert

On Sunday at 4:00, the National Armed Forces of Latvia warned of a possible threat in the airspace of Latvia in the Alūksne, Balvi, Ludza, Rēzekne, and Krāslava regions. The cellular alert system was activated in these areas.

“The National Armed Forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor the airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to potential threats. We have strengthened air defense on the eastern border by deploying additional units,” the first message stated.

“Residents are urged to take shelter indoors, close windows and doors. If you notice a low-flying, suspicious, or dangerous object, do not approach it and call 112. Information about the end of the threat will be provided separately,” the NAF indicated.

The warning was issued at a time when an attack by Ukrainian drones was occurring in the Leningrad region of Russia — local authorities reported that 51 drones were intercepted on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

On Sunday night, a similar warning about a potential drone threat was received by residents of the Võru County in Estonia from the country’s Defense Forces. A few hours later, the Estonian military also reported the end of the threat.

The NAF of Latvia notified about the end of the threat at 7:19, sending a message through the alert system.

“The National Armed Forces inform that the threat in the airspace has been eliminated, further information will follow on the social media ‘Latvijas armija’,” the message stated.
