Residents of Riga occasionally discuss the behavior of public transport inspectors working for Rīgas satiksme on social media. This time, a certain Kris Cibulskis asked the company on the social network Threads why inspections become more frequent and inspectors more abrupt at the end of the month.
According to the author of the publication, in the last days of the month, there is a feeling that inspectors are 'everywhere', and their main goal is to catch as many fare evaders as possible. He also suggested that employees might be working under certain quotas or receiving bonuses for the number of violations detected.
“Good evening! I wanted to ask why your ticket inspectors become especially rude and aggressive towards people at the end of the month? And why is there such a high level of activity specifically at the end of the month? It feels like these dark blue uniforms are everywhere, and their eyes are shining from afar — just to catch some fare evader. Are they required to meet monthly quotas, or does some bonus depend on the volume of 'catch'? I would like to understand why these people feel so agitated. Thank you,” wrote a man.
As of the publication, there were no official comments from Rīgas satiksme.
In the comments, users' opinions were divided. Some sided with the inspectors, noting that the problem lies not with the inspectors but with the violators themselves. “You are directing criticism not at those who break the rules, but at those who do their job,” noted one commenter.
Other users put forward more ironic versions. For instance, one commenter suggested that the increase in inspections might be related to the need to meet quotas by the end of the month, while another joked about the influence of the full moon.
